Every session

All of it,
without the gi

Every class on the timetable is no-gi. No jacket to buy, no separate night to look for, and nothing to work out before you turn up. Rash guard and shorts is the whole kit list.

Direct answer: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Singapore is an all no-gi BJJ academy in central Singapore. Adults and beginners train submission grappling at Clarke Quay in a rash guard and shorts; the academy runs only no-gi sessions.

What changes when the jacket comes off

In the gi you can hold someone in place by the collar or sleeve. Take that away and control has to come from the body itself, so the game moves to underhooks, body locks, wrist control and head position.

It is faster, because escapes are easier and sweat makes everything slip. The underlying positions do not change at all. Mount, side control, guard and back control are the same map; only the handles are different.

  • Rash guard and shorts, no gi to buy.
  • The same coaching format, with questions at the end of every class.
  • One membership covers every session, because every session is no-gi.

On the record

The no-gi side has been here a long time

A place for getting your foundations right, whether you choose to spar both with or without the Gi.
Lifestyle Asia, Shatricia Nair, 2019
Offering a wide range of classes, Gi and No-Gi programs, that cater to various skill sets throughout multiple times in the week.
AsiaOne

Yahoo News also noted "a good No-Gi program since Quek is well-versed in BJJ with and without the Gi". These pieces are from 2015 and 2019, when the academy ran both. It is all no-gi now.

Coming to a no-gi class

What you need

A rash guard or fitted tee

Close fitting, nothing with zips, buttons or pockets. Loose clothing catches fingers and toes.

Shorts or leggings

Again without pockets. If you already own gym clothes you almost certainly own the right thing.

A change of clothes

Outside clothes are not allowed on the mats, so bring a clean set to change into before class.

Short nails

The single most appreciated thing a new person can do, and more important in no-gi where there is more skin contact.

No gi, ever

There is no gi to buy at any point, because there are no gi classes. That is one of the cheaper ways to start a martial art.

Book ahead

Classes are booked ahead. The academy does not accept walk-ins, so message before you come. Message 9457 9426 and we will tell you which class to come to.

No-gi questions

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Singapore is an all no-gi academy at Clarke Quay. Every session on the timetable is no-gi, so there is no separate no-gi night to look for and no gi to buy.

No-gi is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trained in a rash guard and shorts instead of the traditional jacket and trousers. With no cloth to grip, control comes from body locks, underhooks, wrist control and head position, which makes the pace faster and the scrambles more frequent.

A rash guard or fitted t-shirt and shorts or leggings without zips, pockets or buttons. Bring a clean set to change into, since outside clothes are not allowed on the mats. You do not need to own a gi to train no-gi.

Yes. Beginners start here in no-gi like everyone else. The pace is quicker than a gi class, so the coaching leans harder on position and control early, and technique is broken down at the speed of whoever is learning it.

Yes. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Singapore runs only no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling. The academy is at 44 North Canal Road, about three minutes on foot from Clarke Quay MRT.

In practice the terms are used interchangeably in Singapore. Submission grappling is the broader label for grappling without a jacket, and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the form of it taught in a BJJ academy, using the same positions and submissions as the gi game without the cloth grips.

A one-off trial class is $30. Monthly membership is $250 for adults and $200 for anyone under 24, and it covers every class timing.

I have been training here for the past 1 past years and at the start i wasnt making much progress in getting better. But after changing my mindset and listening to the coach(Jason) and applying it i have been improving at a much faster rate. The training is different but very effective and im glad that i decided to continue training here.

Training here under Coach Jason for the last 2 and a half years has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. His approach to BJJ is incredibly technical, with a real emphasis on asking questions and paying attention to details. I came into this gym never having competed before, and thanks to Coach Jason’s guidance and support, I won my first gold medal at blue belt. He created a training environment where I felt prepared, confident, and pushed to bring out my best. What sets Coach Jason apart is his ability to tailor his coaching to each student and their individual strengths and weaknesses. The gym culture is welcoming, supportive, and built around continuous improvement. If you’re serious about learning BJJ in a way that’s both technical and practical, I can’t recommend this gym an

I have trained at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Singapore since day one, from white belt all the way to black belt — a 10-year journey under Jason Quek. Jason has shaped me far beyond becoming an elite BJJ athlete. He shaped my character, discipline, and how I perceive life both on and off the mats. His coaching is honest, demanding, and deeply principled. He builds character, discipline, and resilience. What stands out most is that every black belt in the gym (Clement, Jeong, Nic, Mervyn, Kenneth) and brown belt (Phin, Wei Qin) started as a white belt under Jason. I’ve personally witnessed how he has transformed countless people through BJJ — not just their skill, but their mindset and values. It’s a place for people who genuinely want to improve, be challenged, and grow through real BJJ. If you’re
